ADVANCED PATTERN DESIGN
Presented by Judy Frank

A perfect continuation for those who have completed Judy’s Beginning Pattern Design workshop.

In this workshop participants will learn how to change dart locations, make diagonal seams as well as a princess style bodice and dress.  Bring scissors for paper cutting.  All other materials will be supplied.

Judy Frank specializes in costuming dolls in historical fashions.  She likes her dolls to be as authentic as possible so Judy starts with the undergarments and finishes with the accessories and hairstyle.  Judy started designing for Barbie® when she was eleven.  She had saved enough money to buy the doll but couldn't afford to also buy the fashions.   A trip to the Barbie™ Hall of Fame Museum in Palo Alto, CA in 1996 was the catalyst to leave porcelain reproduction dolls behind and return to her first costuming doll: Barbie®!

ACCESSORIES 101
Presented by Ann Swindell, Marty Swindell and Margenia Charlton

Turn drab into fab with Barbie®-sized accessories!  Learn how to make an ordinary fashion extraordinary with custom add-ons like belts, jewelry, handbags and embellishments.  Details really help to complete an outfit and this workshop will demonstrate techniques, skills and tips to liven up your doll's world of fashion.

Suggested items to bring to the workshop include a doll with a simple dress or fashion that can be accessorized, scissors, and jewelry pliers.  Other materials including needles, thread, fabric, beads, notions, etc., will be provided.

Ann, Marty and Margenia have been collecting Barbie® together since 1994, and have attended 10+ Barbie® conventions.  Collectively they have entered and won numerous competition awards, donated silent auction dolls, centerpiece and raffle items, participated in fashion shows, attended workshops, hosted tables, and assisted with behind the scenes convention planning, including assisting last year’s club in the raffle and competition rooms.  They share a love of OOAK dolls, and are eager to show you ideas to accessorize your doll -- your way!

LONG BEAUTIFUL HAIR: TIPS AND TECHNIQUES FOR HAIRSTYLING
Presented by Peter Nickel

In this workshop you will learn to braid your Barbie® doll’s hair using some new and different techniques.  We will braid with 4 strands in 2 different patterns as well as learn to braid with more than 4 strands.  Peter will also demonstrate simpler techniques such as single strand twisting and offer tips on curling doll hair.  More tips, tricks and techniques will be covered that we hope will inspire the attendees when doing their own Barbie® doll hair designs!  Examples will be provided for each of the techniques.

You will need to bring a Barbie® doll with VERY long hair and a rattail comb.  All other materials will be provided. There will be a brief question and answer session. Please write down 2 questions about styling doll hair and bring them with you to class.

Peter has been designing Barbie® doll’s hair since childhood.  His professional doll hair styling career has spanned the past 17 years designing exclusively for Bruce A. Nygren Ltd.  He is eager to share his years of experience with you in this workshop.

ONE-HOUR COUTURE – BEGINNER’S LEVEL
Presented by Colleen Meesey

Have you ever wanted to create one-of-a-kind Barbie® dolls, but were intimidated by the time or skill you think is required?  In this beginner level workshop, you’ll learn how to create a runway-ready look for your doll in an hour or less, as well as skills you can build on for future OOAK creations.  No sewing machine, painting skills, or hairstyling prowess required!

In this workshop you will:

 • Learn to select a doll to use as the basis for your creation when you are limited in time or skill.
 • Learn how fabric selection makes all the difference.
 • Create a dress – your choice of casual, cocktail, or evening gown styles, using the most basic pattern that you  can also easily create yourself.
 • Add couture elements to your dress with trims.
 • Create basic jewelry items and/or select from ready-made accessories, depending on your comfort level.
 • Create a chic hair style with minimal fuss to complement your doll and dress.

We’ll also discuss ideas for how to take the basic style you’ve created up a level, and you’ll receive tips on where to go to learn more!

Please bring a nude Barbie® doll to dress, a pair of scissors and a doll brush or comb.  All other materials will be supplied.

Prerequisite: ability to do a basic hand-sewn running stitch is a plus.

Colleen has been collecting Barbie® and creating OOAK dolls since 1993 although you could say that she started when she made her first Barbie® dress by cutting off the foot of a sock when she was a child.  Colleen has been contributing OOAK Barbie® dolls for centerpieces since Dearborn in 2001 as well as contributing to many Convention Silent Auctions.
